Our Story
A family owned, neighborhood restaurant.
The Palace International was started by Maurice and Caren Ochola. The two natives of Kenya came to the United States to attend universities where they met through a mutual friend. They settled in Durham, NC to start a family and eventually The Palace in 1989. The Palace became a big part of Durham lore through the 1990s not only offering renowned African cuisine but more notably offering a meeting ground for diverse communities and a world beat music scene. |
Unfortunately in 2001 The Palace burned down. Caren and her husband were devastated. They decided to rest and spend time with their two children, who were still in school. Life went on. But, soon enough, their roots caught up with them, and in 2007 The Palace International reopened.
Today Caren and Maurice, along with their two kids Moses and Suzanna Ochola all participate in The Palace’s daily operations. The family owned restaurant specializes in both traditional East African delicacies as well as African spins on world cuisines.
We’re committed to providing an exceptional dining and social experience through food, music and culture. Let The Palace International make your occasion, memorable and delicious with a unique catering experience!
